On the 11th of Muharram, after the tragic events of the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, the surviving family members and companions, including Lady Zainab (AS) and Imam Ali Zainul Abidin (AS), were taken as captives and started their journey towards the city of Kufa.
After the battle, the family members of Imam Hussain (AS) and their companions, particularly the women and children, were held captive by the forces of Yazid ibn Muawiya. The captives were then taken from Karbala and transported through various regions, including Kufa, where they had earlier set out from to join Imam Hussain (AS) in his mission.
The journey towards Kufa was emotionally and physically challenging for the captives, as they had endured immense grief and suffering due to the tragic loss of their loved ones in the battle. Additionally, they faced humiliation and mistreatment at the hands of the forces of Yazid during their captivity.
Throughout this journey, Lady Zainab (AS), the sister of Imam Hussain (AS), and Imam Ali Zainul Abidin (AS), the son of Imam Hussain (AS), played vital roles in upholding the legacy of Karbala and keeping the memory of the tragic events alive. Lady Zainab, in particular, demonstrated remarkable courage, eloquence, and resilience in conveying the message of justice and truth to the people they encountered during their journey.
The captivity and journey of the family members of Imam Hussain (AS) are integral parts of the Karbala tragedy. The events following the Battle of Karbala, including the suffering of the survivors and their eventual return to Damascus, continue to be deeply mourned and commemorated during the month of Muharram, especially by Shia Muslims, as they serve as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Imam Hussain (AS) and the timeless principles he stood for.
